Overview: At the start of the new year, China’s logistics sector has continued its recovery trend and demonstrated strong endogenous momentum and resilience. According to the latest data from the China Federation of Logistics and Purchasing, in January 2026, China’s Logistics Performance Index (LPI) stood at 51.9%, a slight increase of 0.2 percentage points from the previous month. This marks the fifth consecutive month that the index has remained above the 50% mark—a threshold indicating expansion—demonstrating sustained robust logistics activity and steadily improving smoothness of economic circulation.
At the start of the new year, China’s logistics sector has continued its recovery and upward trend, demonstrating strong endogenous momentum and resilience.
Meanwhile, the express delivery industry continues to maintain a high growth rate. Preliminary statistics released by the State Post Bureau show that in January, the country’s express delivery volume exceeded 11 billion parcels, with an average daily handling volume surpassing 350 million parcels—a new monthly record. “The peak consumption period before the Spring Festival, combined with the fervor of the ‘New Year Goods Festival’ promotions, has spurred a concentrated surge in delivery demand,” noted an expert from the Development Research Center of the State Post Bureau. “The express delivery network is operating efficiently, and services such as ‘same-day delivery’ and ‘next-morning delivery’ have expanded their coverage further, providing strong support for supply during the holiday season and ensuring people’s livelihoods.”
It is worth noting that the logistics structure continues to be optimized, yielding significant results in cost reduction and efficiency improvement. Throughout 2025, China’s total social logistics costs as a ratio to GDP fell to 13.8%, a further decrease of 0.2 percentage points from 2024, meaning that the country’s overall logistics costs were reduced by more than 200 billion yuan for the year. This achievement has been made possible by adjustments to the transportation mix, the promotion of multimodal transport, and the deepened application of smart logistics technologies. In January of this year, nationwide rail and waterway freight volumes increased by 3.1% and 4.7% year-on-year, respectively, while container shipments via rail-water intermodal transport rose by 18.3% year-on-year. Pilot programs for “single-bill-of-lading” and “single-container” systems are accelerating their implementation in 12 hub cities across the country, effectively reducing transit times and lowering logistics costs.
In terms of infrastructure, a modern transportation and logistics system is accelerating its development. By the end of 2025, China’s total mileage of integrated, multi-dimensional transportation networks will exceed 6.2 million kilometers, and the construction of national logistics hubs, backbone cold-chain logistics bases, and the New Western Land-Sea Corridor will be fully advanced. Logistics companies in many regions are speeding up the deployment of automated warehouses, unmanned sorting systems, and new-energy delivery fleets, significantly accelerating their transition toward greener and smarter operations. For example, in the China Light Textile City of Keqiao, Zhejiang Province, during the pre-holiday peak period for fabric shipments, several logistics companies leveraged intelligent dispatching platforms to achieve “order placed on the same day, shipped that very night,” thereby ensuring the stability and efficiency of the industrial and supply chains.
Moreover, the resilience of international logistics channels has been enhanced. The cumulative number of China-Europe freight train trips has exceeded 130,000, connecting more than 240 cities in 27 European countries. The efficiency of cross-border land-and-sea transport along the Belt and Road continues to improve, providing solid support for foreign trade enterprises to stabilize orders and expand markets. According to data from the General Administration of Customs, in the first half of January 2026, China’s total value of goods trade imports and exports rose by 5.8% year-on-year. Among them, exports performed particularly strongly, with high-value-added products such as ships, electric vehicles, and smart home appliances leading the growth rate. This remarkable performance is inseparable from the robust coordination of an efficient logistics system.
Experts say that as the policy benefits continue to be unleashed in the concluding year of the 14th Five-Year Plan and as the construction of a nationwide unified market deepens, the logistics industry—acting as the “lifeline” of the real economy—will play an even more prominent role. Moving forward, the industry will focus on key areas such as reducing overall social logistics costs, increasing the share of multimodal transport, and deepening digital and intelligent empowerment, thereby accelerating its transition to a new stage of high-quality development—from “large” to “strong”—and providing stronger support for building a new development paradigm.
